the photolog
9 june 2005: day 1 -
we were to be gathered at changi airport around 4.30pm. our flight was leaving around 6.55pm. malaysian airlines. we were to wear our uniform dark blue polo tees. and oh, we had to wrap the paddles in bubble wrap to check them in.

above: the responsible paddle-wrappers with the wrapped-up paddles. and oh yeah, one of the traditions is to stick up extra appendages while people are taking photos. HEH.

the other tradition IS taking photos itself. aka TP. ;)

warning. warning. you are in the 4th dimension... warning. warning. (and no, i have no idea why this turned out like tt or what we are doing here. heh.)

and now... the juniors@changi!

and the seniors@changi!

and last but not least... who can forget the ROCK CHICKS?!?! ;)
yeah. we rock man!
and so it was on board malaysian airlines from singapore to penang. was talking to the vice-cap of the guys' team on the way to penang. and from the airport there it was a subsequent *1 hour* bus ride to the bayview beach resort.
it was around 10.30pm when we arrived. we were all pretty tired, but we got our sponges from wenya and geok, our ever-reliable welfare duo! ;) wahaha. and then vic called me; wendy, yirang, vic, serene and myself spent the night playing pool till about 1am.
and oh yes. pool is one of our primary activities in the hotel.
nothing to do? go play pool. heh.

vic and serene. the 'pool sisters'!

hot babes playing pool! meow! ;)
the other notable aspects of the hotel, besides the wonderful rooms with their queen-sized beds... is the lifts. the bloody *slow* lifts whereby if you want to go from the 10th floor to the 1st floor and vice versa, you need to give yourself 5 min AT LEAST. besides the ridiculously LONG waiting time (because of all the human traffic as the other international teams were all housed in the bayview beach resort), the lifts all stop at EVERY FLOOR. and 1 lift automatically stops at the 2nd floor, even when there is NO ONE waiting or wanting to get out. now is tt freaky or is THAT freaky?

bah. the bane of my life.
yeah man. i still remember how LONG it took to wait for the lifts... anyway we played pool all the way till past 1am at night. then my roomie and i made our way back to our room.
which like i said, was lovely. except for the fact tt she flushed the toilet too hard. and the flush handle got stuck in the flushing position. and it kept on flushing continuously by itself ALL THE FUCKING NIGHT. in the end she got a bit freaked out, so we shared 1 bed. so much for 2 queen-sized beds. arhaha.
10 june 2005: day 2 -
we started the morning with a MORNING RUN. i repeat, a MORNING RUN. nope. the guys didn't have to do it. no one actually had to do it except the MYANMMAR NATIONAL TEAM. and US.
anyway yirang and i were late coz of the 5 min we spent waiting for the LIFT. basket. stupid lift.
the run was approx 25 min. we ran past stuff like the sea (on our right) as we were running on the road and it WAS a seaview resort... as well a a cemetery (heh heh heh)... we met at around 6.15am. finished the run close to 7am (the myanmmar national team was starting their run as we were returning), returned to the hotel carpark... and did CIRCUITS. and PUSH-UPs. in front of the other guests. talk about throw face.
we went to breakfast wet and sticky and sweaty, all still in our training gear.
but breakfast was great. it's the best meal of the day, no doubt about it. the buffet spread, the don't-know-how-many-ways to have your eggs done, the ham and bacon and sausage, the gourmet cheese, the 4 kinds of cereal and what-not.. all you gotta do is queue. a lot of people were around too... tables were a little tricky to come by. but fortunately day 2 everything was still more relaxed. no race yet mah.
after breakfast we actually had our precious little RnR time. i went to bathe, then joined some of the girls downstairs. we wanted to go to the beach, but upon seeing the BROWN surf decided against it and plopped ourselves into the pool + jacuzzi. now THAT was the life.
then came bath #2 and lunch.
it was curry.

which explains the damn sian look on our faces. FOOD BAN, remember??? nah bei. ended up eating plain rice and trying to to get too much gravy on it.
after tt we had to go back to our rooms to get our stuff (sponges, paddles, barang barang). as the banes of my life were packed with the rowers from other teams travelling up and down and waiting waiting waiting, we decided to be smart.
we took the stairs.

all the way to the 9th/10th storeys... and then we realised the doors were locked FROM THE INSIDE.
that's the time you go KNNCCB what the fuck just happened here.
that explains the also damn sian look on our faces as we descend with great irritation. and the inner-thighs ache tt plagued all of us thereafter.
speaking of stairs, the hotel stairs WEREN'T the worst of it.
let me introduce you to the stairs at the race site.

to get from the registration to your boat and vice versa, the so-called 'journey' involves at least 3 storeys of uneven stairs.
which is ok when you're going down, but when you've JUST FINISHED RACING and you're BLOODY FUCKING TIRED and you feel like you can't move a muscle and you STILL have to climb those FUCKING STAIRS... tt is the ultimate in swear-word generating. and muscle aches-causing. just ask ALL of us.

add to that our LONG WALK UP THE SLOPE from the bus to the race site, and there you have it.
the 3 things we spend the most things on in penang:
1. stairs
2. lifts
3. water (rowing + bathing. that's all we seem to do)

see? damn SHACK lah.
so anyway after lunch and getting our barang barang we row a couple of hours warm-up, race sets, women's race simulation, and mixed with the guys to get ourselves aclimatised and used to the water conditions.
mona also discovered tt meiping has a penchant for scratching when she rows behind her.

see the marks on the shoulder? like involved in CAT FIGHT like tt. wahaha. ok lah. mona also quite unglam. HEH. again.
then it's back in the evening in time for the official opening ceremony of the penang international dragonboat festival.
well... we have to wear our infamous lok cock throw face kopitiam auntie nusdragonboat white polo tee. fantastic.
but for some reason everyone, including the people from the other teams, are all into this photo-taking frenzy with their so-called rivals.
so we got to take a picture with the royal australian navy rowers.

hmm. i wonder what 1 of the guys is looking at?
and lok cock shirt aside, lydia got to take a pic with this really hunky royal australian navy guy whom ALL the girls - including the singapore national team girls - were absolutely fawning over.
(but yeah. he WAS an absolute doll.)

hellooooooooooo baby!
we also had to take the requisite teamnus pic with the guys. whom vic termed 'the uglier ones'.

then it was out of the hotel lobby to this open-air basketball (i think) court. to wait for 1 fucking HOUR for the VIP. and the emcee had such ATROCIOUS CRINGEWORTHY ENGLISH my god we all wanted to kill ourselves.
but in the meantime, waiting = a good opportunity to take stupid photos!

like the girls giving each other a massage... heh heh heh.

or this sweet one about cindy and wenya...
or even our narcissistic PROFILE PICS, courtesy of miss sam.

serene (pretty pretty),

me,

and wendy, trying to raise her eyebrow!!! with little success, of course. heh heh.
finally the guest-of-honour (mayor of penang) came out to give the customary speech. we had a throwface representation of nus (our ivp jacket! in contrast to other teams' FLAGS) courtesy of johnny (who'd been saboed to go onstage actually), we tried to tahan a line dance noted for effort...
and then it was DINNER!!! (yeah man we were FAMISHED!!!)
but first things first: OUT of the damn polo tee!!!

miss sam: proudly displaying the freedom from restraint of tt ugly nus polo tee.
oh. but the wait to get our dinner was DAMN long. by the time we walked to the restaurant + waited for our table + waited for our food... it took so long tt we were all damn dulan.

like vic and wendy: perfect example of hungry miserable tired rowers.
and tt's just waiting for food, can?
after tt we went on a walk around before coming back to the hotel. we had some meeting at 10pm (which we didn't know we'd be late for because we didn't even know it was supposed to exist. oops.), and lights out (ARGH!!! like army!!!) was at 11pm. bah.
11 june 2005: day 3 -
day 3. race day #1. no morning run. thank god. but breakfast was at 6.30am ANYWAY because we needed to board the bus and be on our way to the race site at 7.30am.
EVERYONE was very tired. most of us weren't actually awake yet. HELLO? it was WHAT ungodly hour in the morning?
so you had a barrage of sleeping people...

from vic,

to wendy,

to yirang,

to jul,

and to me... yar lah yar lah. fucking unglam lah. WE KNOW.
but cannot help it leh.
other things we do to occupy ourselves while waiting (coz there is A LOT OF WAITING to be done)...

share mp3 players... heh

and TP (take pictures)!!! can you guess?
oh. tt's our team photo by the way.

oh. and here is the photo with the japanese team...

and the guys team (again). was quite fascinating how they wanted to take pictures with us. apparently the japanese were fascinated by our official team logo (copyright of geok wei):

guo da long zhou.
anyway the races we had for today were all HEATS. women's 12-crew small boat, mixed 20-crew big boat, and women's 20-crew big boat.
guess what? WE GOT INTO THE FINALS FOR women's 20-crew big boat and mixed 20-crew big boat!!! talk about completely unexpected and overwhelming! up against so many countries and so many national teams... and we actually made it somehow... tt was such a trip!!!
but other interesting events of the day included the teh tahrik challenge.

in which we sent yirang and wenya down. yirang wowed with her black face and impressive split. while wenya looked damn sexy in the red apron can?
and no one beat the guys. they actually went all out in their challenge, so much so tt one braved life and limb just to pour teh tahrik.
so day #1 of races ended on a damn good note.
we were all damn high when we walked out for dinner.
ooh and there was this wild monkey tt jumped out of nowhere (that somehow decided tt it liked serene. ooh. captivated by charm.)...

...and scared the living daylights out of the boss, who went shrieking and flailing her arms as she ran across the road... only to later pretend that she HADN'T been doing all of the above when the monkey was discovered to be quite a softie in serene's arms. ;)

after tt it was on to the dinner table. where we waited for a while, but like i said before:

give me my ice and i'm a happy girl. ;)
later after tt we walked back to the hotel, stopping along to look at stuff to buy. well. MOST of us walked back to the hotel. SOME of us decided to set bad examples, being as they were the captain, vice-captain and coach of the team, and happily ride past us on their TRISHAW. nah bei.

and ok lah. also got requisite best friend photo. HEH. *muakz*

anyway tonight our lights out was supposed to be at 10pm.
supposed, lah. some people wanted to be ROLE MODELS. kept telling their roommates "i wanna be a role model."
me? vic wendy and i still wanted OUR ROCK GIG (postponed 3 times already!!!) in room 927 (i think). basket so i went over to wendy's room... then in the end vic and serene went down to play pool till almost 2am; serene deposited her 'kid' raine in wendy's room when she went down to play; yirang came over after a while... and all of us ended up sleeping over in wendy's room.
it was a mad rush back to our own room at 5.30am to avoid getting CAUGHT by tan chun tat or the boss.
12 june 2005: day 4 -
day 4 = race day #2. tt's when all the FINALS sets are.
well. we came in bright and early. surprisingly energised (high on adrenaline) from an almost sleepless (for some of us) night the night before.
among the retarded things tt we traditionally associate with our team on race day, we had people:

playing frisbee with sponges

mixing the glucose... and UM... shaking the coleman at an average rate of 160 strokes/min...

we had people doing pull-ups... (both um... proper and NG shots included!!!)

we even had the chance to introduce the DUSTBIN.
oh yar. and photos.
we took a lot of photos.

above: the original line of 4.
below: the um... original line of 4 + a couple of extras. heh.

there were a couple of sweet moments...

like wenting and yirang... :)
and the similar clothing moments...
(note: cindy has requested tt i take this photo down. sorry lah. the girl shy about her sexy figure.)
check out vic and cindy and OMG HOUR-GLASS FIGURE!!! *green with envy*

and then there was the usual FINGERS tradition... tt's wendy, mona and my fingers. cameo appearance heh heh heh.

oh. and i have no idea what i'm supposed to be doing here, but by god is that a PANTENE HAIR ADVERT or what???!!!
today was battle day.
we warmed up...

boy do we look cool or do we look COOL???

we signed in...

and we made our way down to battle.
we raced in the finals for both women's and mixed...

the boats coming in...

and when we weren't racing, we were supporting those who were racing...
we didn't win any medals this time, but the fact tt we got into the finals in the first place was already such a trip. we knew we'd performed our best, and we were absolutely ecstatic with our performance anyway! :)
so after we finished with the races... we needed to bathe...
warning... shower scene alert!!!
one girl and one guy bathing together...
.
.
.
.
.
.
.
.

in an outdoor shower. wahaha.
and the final picture:

with the royal australian navy HUNK and tt guy from the team who seemed to like talking to me a lot.
then it was back to the hotel to collect our barang-barang.

and ooh! happy family! talk about similar choice in clothing. this is the pic tt earned cindy the 'tie-the-red-string award!'

other pictures of mention = geok and meiping in their '60s sunglasses. this picture earns ah ping the 'most outstanding beer lady' award. hahahahaha.
and finally, it was on our way back to the airport by bus, and from the airport to singapore by plane.

we went by malaysian air. once again the airline with such lousy service tt we might as well just serve ourselves our own food heh heh heh.

and... the twilight zone tt is malaysian air. heh heh heh.
finally: home sweet home.
oh well. so tt concludes the penang trip photolog. hope you guys enjoyed it!
we were to be gathered at changi airport around 4.30pm. our flight was leaving around 6.55pm. malaysian airlines. we were to wear our uniform dark blue polo tees. and oh, we had to wrap the paddles in bubble wrap to check them in.
